-Pride and Prejudice-

For those of you who have been chatting with me lately on msn, you must surely be aware that my latest craze is over Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". The movie was courtesy of UIP for schools and I caught the show together with Cass. The idyllic setting in the English countryside was moving and the opening track was especially touching with Keira Knightley walking into the courtyard and giving us a glimpse into the Bennets' life. Indeed being the hopeless romantic I am, the meeting scene between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet was only the stuff that movies can be made of or books in this case! (Ok gals, I still have my feet planted firmly on the ground.)

After watching the movie, as one of my colleagues remarked: Makes me want to fall in love! LOL...of course, "the course of true love never did run smooth" and sometimes "twain never shall the two meet" as in Romeo and Juliet. The gist of it is: yes, love isn't the rosy picture it is always portrayed as in movies. ;)

As exams marking is over and it's the last week of school for the kids next week, I've been catching up with my reading, one of which is you guessed it! Pride and Prejudice. I must say the book is more indepth in terms of character portrayal as compared to the movie. Then again it is hard to cram in every sub-plot into the movie. Certain characters or incidents were inevidently left out in the movie e.g. Wickham's passing fancy for Miss King. Nevertheless the movie is quite a faithful adaptation of the book. Indeed the book must be Austen's most socially acceptable book on the concept of love and romance. If you have read Emma and Sense and Sensibility, the female protagonists invariably are unconventional for their times especially Emma with Mr Knightley. Well then again, Elizabeth was indeed a woman ahead of her time who dared to speak her mind instead of playing the traditional role of women in society. For that, Jane Bennet would fit the case better. Truly I can go on and on but hm, I need to go to church soon...another time perhaps I'll continue..
